This Summer, Learn to Make a Perfect Granita

Nothing beats a homemade granita on a hot summer day! Something about the idea of fluffy, crunchy pile of flavored ice feels particularly refreshing. Today I will be showing you how to make your own granita’s while taking a rife off of mine.

A couple of weeks ago, Nick and I had a granita competition with our parent as the judges. I made a passion fruit, lemon and mint garnita while Nick made a strawberry, lemon basil granita. They both turned out amazing and here I am about to share them with you. Before that, down below is the recipe to the base of the granita in case you want you try different flavours. Granita base
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup sugar

Passion fruit lemon and mint granita

Move on over popsicle and ice cream, this granita passion fruit lemon and mint is summer’s new favourite frozen treat !

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups ice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup passion fruit juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup Lemon juice
  • 3 mint leaves plus more for decoration

Instructions
 

  • In a small size saucepan over medium, combine the lemon juice, sugar passion fruit juice and mint leaves. Keep on stirring until the sugar has dissolved and the mint leaves have soaked long enough. ( around 4-5 minutes )
  • Once done take the mint leaves out and transfer the juice into a bowl. Let it sit in the fridge for 3 minutes. Meanwhile in a blender, crush the ice and water so that there is no big chunks. Add the juice to the blender and mix.
  • Pour it into glasses and serve with min leaves and a lemon wedge. Enjoy !

Strawberry lemon and basil granita

Granita is the sophisticated, well-travelled older sister of the slushie and shaved ice. It is simple to make and delicious !

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups ice
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 5 basil leaves
  • 1/3 cup Lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup fresh strawberries chopped

Instructions
 

  • In a small saucepan, combine strawberries, sugar, lemon juice and half of the water. Ever so often stir so that it doesn't stick to the bottom. After a couple of minutes, it should become kind of like a syrup. If not add more water. Use a sieve to discard any chunks.
  • Place in the fridge to cool for 3-4 minutes. During that time, in a blender crush ice and the rest of the water. Add the syrup and mix until combined. To serve, you can coat the rim with sugar and put a basil leaf on top. Enjoy !
